The Allegrini 2018 Corvina Veronese La Poja (with 14,000 bottles made) delivers lots of ripe fruit with baked cherry, plum and earthy notes of wet clay, terracotta and rusty nail. This vintage lacks some of the extreme clarity and focus that the Corvina grape is very capable of giving. The growing season saw a cool spring and heat spikes throughout the summer that contribute to the large span of random fruit aromas on offer here.

A graceful red, with supple, fine-grained tannins swathed in a lovely range of crushed black cherry, black tea leaf and Mandarin orange peel flavors. This is one of my favorite wines from Allegrini because I am fascinated by some of Italy's monovarietal wines made from grapes we usually only see in blends. It's fun to deconstruct a wine, and tasting Corvina on its own teaches us what it adds or doesn't add to blended wine like Amarone. The 2016 Corvina Veronese La Poja is fresh and angular, with a solid center of gravity and good depth. It's not especially aromatic, although you do get dried cherry, plum and spice. It offers smoky tones of tar and earth, and there's balanced acidity on the close.

An elegant red, with an enticing nose of ripe fruit and floral accents, as well as a tang of iron-laced minerality that underscores flavors of ripe black raspberry and cherry fruit, star anise and Earl Grey tea. Medium- to full-bodied and well-knit, sleek, fine-grained tannins emerge to firm the lasting finish. Hard to stop sipping, but should expand nicely with even short-term cellaring. Delicately spiced, this medium- to full-bodied red is elegant and finely knit, with supple tannins and fresh acidity forming a harmonious frame for the deep, layered range of black cherry puree, black tea leaf, iron and olive flavors.
