The 2005 Valpolicella Ripasso I Progni reveals superb clarity and depth in its dark cherry fruit with tons of elegance and refined tannins. A bit musty and nutty at first, but soon blows off to reveal floral and sweet berry aromas. Medium-bodied, with a tight texture and a clean fruit and mineral finish. A nervy red. Drink now. 1,700 cases made. -JC

Strident nose of spicy-toned cherry and plum. Plenty of oak, but well-handled. Round, soft and luscious. Deep cherry fruit with nutmeg and liquorice. Good length, built to last.

I Progni is a ripe, fruit-forward ripasso with notes of blackberry preserves and lighter shadings of spice, leather and cola. The wine tastes full and generous and leaves a long trail of cherry and sour almond on the close. ——M.L.(10/1/2009)—— 90
