The 1978 Montrachet Grand Cru from Marquis de Laguiche is clearly fully mature, though it should continue to offer pleasure over the next ten, perhaps 15 years. It has an attractive nose of walnut, smoke, dried lemon and white flowers. The palate remains fresh and vital with lanolin and spice notes on the entry. This is a wine of depth and power, though it does not have the precision of clinical intensity of the infant 2011 tasted alongside. Stylistically, it bears more similarities with the 1992 Montrachet–a grand cru that demands respect.
