Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 The David Proprietary Red (a barrel sample, containing dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Franc) reveals youthfully subdued notes of crushed blackberries and fresh black currants with hints of chocolate box, tobacco leaf, black tea and forest floor plus a hint of charcoal. Full-bodied and laden with expressive black fruit and earthy layers, it has bags of energy and freshness, finishing with a lovely, persistent spring in its step.

The other cuvée of The David, the 2014 Proprietary Red from Howell Mountain is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot. This is a sensational effort as well. Opaque purple, with notes of graphite, mulberry, white chocolate and blackberry, the wine is deep, full-bodied, voluptuously textured and a total hedonistic and intellectual turn-on. This wine should drink well for at least another 15 or more years.

The 2013 Proprietary Red Blend the David Howell Mountain is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon with equal parts Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Darker, bluer more primordial fruits are present in this wine that has a dense ruby/purple color, a sweet kiss of oak, licorice and incense. It’s medium to full-bodied, ripe and attractive. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon The David, a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, plays it a little closer to the vest than the Vineyard 887 or The Beast. A more classically defined wine, it displays restrained black currant and loamy soil notes intertwined with a touch of background oak. Medium to full-bodied and well-delineated with a tannic grip that suggests several years of bottle age will be beneficial, it should be at its finest between 2016 and 2028. The irrepressible David Del Dotto continues to offer a flamboyant presence in Napa Valley, but there is no discounting just how impressive his wines can be. Tel. (707) 963-2134
