The beautiful 2003 David Proprietary Red, a Bordeaux-like blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot, and 19% Cabernet Franc, exhibits smoky, earthy, black cherry, and currant fruit along with hints of cedar and new saddle leather. Good density, elegance, and texture as well as a long, silky finish suggest it should drink well for 5-6 years.
The ebullient David Del Dotto recently purchased the 50-acre Pinot Noir vineyards of Bill and Joan Smith on the Sonoma Coast, so I assume readers can look forward to some Pinot Noir cuvees from Del Dotto in the future. The estate has revealed a remarkable ability to attract tourists given what is said by many to be the finest winemaking tour in Napa Valley. They have also launched the brilliant marketing idea of allowing consumers to taste different wines in various types of American and French cooperage, then having their favorite wine bottled specifically for them. The following wines are not part of that program.
