The 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva bursts from the palate with exotic dark fruit, flowers, mint and licorice, all of which come to life in a sumptuous, voluptuous style that is highly appealing. Layers of fruit build to the rich, creamy finish. This is another gorgeous wine from Castellare. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. I have long been a fan of Castellare. These are among my staples in Chianti Classico. As excellent as the wines often are, my impression is that quality and consistency have both increased in a big way over the last few years. This year’s new releases include a special commemorative wine made to celebrate the estate’s 30th vintage. While I am not usually a big fan of these “cellar blends,” the Trenta Vendemmie is truly a special bottle well worth seeking out. This riserva shows clean, polished lines, and it offers bright nuances of cherry, blackberry, leather and moist earth. The mouthfeel is crisp but powerful, and there’s a lingering sensation of forest berry and chopped herb on the finish. — (4/1/2013) —90
