Made with 100% Sangiovese, the 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Montebello Sette is a selection of fruit from a single vineyard with 22-year-old vines in characteristic clay soils with lots of rocks. The wine is redolent of dark fruit, baked plum, cinnamon and tarry spice. This vintage is especially tight and rich in terms of its concentration, and the wine closes with fine tannins over a full-bodied mouthfeel. The fresh acidity is another plus. This is a 15,000-bottle release.

Made with 100% Sangiovese, the 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Montebello Sette draws its fruit from 21-year-old vines planted in silty clay soils with a lot of smaller stones mixed in. This is a production of 8,000 bottles. This pretty wine shows dark intensity with blackberry, baked plum, Mediterranean herb and soft mineral tones. The tannins are gentle, but this wine also shows a good sense of structure that pulls it together nicely.

Set aside some time and a steak Diane recipe (with cream and cognac) for the Tolaini 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Montebello Sette. It is a gorgeous creation showing enormous depth, elegance and textural fiber all at once. The bouquet opens to wild flowers, cassis and blueberries with smoke, tobacco and potting soil. This is a silky and nuanced wine that shows mid-weight intensity and silky tannins on the close.

The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Montebello Sette feels just as important as it sounds. It offers big, mature and dense fruit that you can chew on. This pure Sangiovese carries itself with great fullness, generous fruit and nicely integrated tannins, and it begs for a steak au poivre. You can't overstate the thickness and softness here. Some 15,000 bottles were produced.

This is a 100% expression of Sangiovese that was fermented in large oak casks and aged in stainless steel (for six months) followed by 16 months in tonneaux. The 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Montebello Sette is truly elegant and beautiful despite everything you may have heard about this challenging vintage. The wine reaches for a level of finesse and nuance that can only be achieved when the winemaking team is pushed to obtain the highest quality despite adverse conditions. The fruit is generous, round and supple. Delicate notes of licorice, cola and crushed rock add to the complexity. Some 15,000 bottles were made.
