The 2008 Pinot Noir Hyde Vineyard, which included about 15% whole-clusters, exhibits a dark garnet color, a terrific nose of forest floor, black and red currants, pomegranate, camphor and underbrush. This has the complex, C?te de Nuits-like aromatics followed by a wine with terrific intensity, a full-bodied mouthfeel and a long, long finish. This was a real shocking result from another challenging vintage in Northern California – as this was one of the most striking Pinots in the tasting, standing up handsomely against some of the more acclaimed vintages.

The medium ruby 2008 Pinot Noir Hyde Vineyard possesses herbs, earth and spice, a somewhat narrowly framed, medium-bodied mouthfeel, and a clipped finish. Normally, I have liked this Pinot Noir better in the past, but of course, this is 2008, an often challenging vintage for North Coast Pinot. Drink it over the next 2-3 years. One of the most reliable negociant firms in all of California is that of Patz and Hall, as the following tasting notes demonstrate. They are spot-on across the board with their generic as well as single-vineyard wines. There is no doubt they have been accessing some of the best single-vineyard sites in California for nearly as long as I have been writing about wine. Patz and Hall now produce eight separate Pinot Noirs, which would make them feel at home working in the Cote d-Or, where most vignerons have at least a half dozen different offerings.Tel. Lots of good, rich cherry fruit in this Pinot, overlaid with oak. But there’s something off. High alcohol gives it an awkward heat. It is very difficult to imagine this wine aging.——S.H.(5/1/2011)—— 86
