In 1996, I saw many Chardonnays with less flavor, complexity and length than their 1995 counterparts, but that is not the case at Littorai. The 1996 Chardonnay Mays Canyon, from a gravelly hillside vineyard surrounded on three sides by the Russian River, reveals scents of tropical fruits intertwined with subtle pain grille and orange rind notes. A thicker, richer wine buttressed by surprisingly fine acidity for a 1996, this is an exceptional, interesting, complex Chardonnay that should age nicely for 2-4 years.
This small artisanal producer has moved to a barn/winery high on Howell Mountain, adjacent to the Black Sears Vineyard. Proprietors Heidi and Ted Lemon continue to turn out some of California's most elegant, flavorful, subtle wines. Littorai's wines are only available via their mailing list.
