This entry-level blend of equal parts Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot offers outstanding value. The 2019 Al Passo (with 110,000 bottles made) shows bright energy and vertical lift. There are aromas of sweet cherry, black pepper, cinnamon and crushed stone. You get a wide spectrum of aromas over a mid-weight body and soft texture.

The Tolaini 2017 Al Passo is always an ambitious wine that takes the best of the grapes in its blend: Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Each give freshness, structure and textural fiber. Al Passo opens to dark berry fruit and plum, with spice, tobacco and tilled earth. This is a well-priced wine that promises lots of pairings, especially out of a Tuscan cookbook.

There are three grapes here in more or less equal measure: Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. You'll find sturdy notes of tilled earth in the 2016 Al Passo, with lots of intensity and ripe fruit. It would make a nice pairing with a good old spaghetti al ragù. The wine is balanced and bright without too much concentration or heft. It feels very Tuscan. This is Tolaini's base wine, of which they produced a massive 100,000 bottles in this vintage, and you get excellent value.

Now a blend of equal parts Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2015 Al Passo is a bold, beautiful and fully ripe red wine that is both exuberant and immediate. Those rich fruit flavors burst from the glass in this sunny vintage, and you are treated to a seamless sequence of black cherry, blackberry and spice aromas. Subtle notes of tar and crushed stone create a delicate frame around that luscious fruit. This is a mid-weight wine to drink straight out of the gate. Some 91,000 bottles were made.

In contrast to my expectations of the vintage, the 2014 Al Passo opens to a dark and luscious appearance with dense color saturation. The bouquet is full and generous, with thick layers of black fruit and ripe cherry. The blend is 85% Sangiovese and 15% Merlot aged in both bottle and tonneaux for up to 14 months. Despite the intensity of the wine's appearance and its aromas, the mouthfeel is more simple and streamlined instead. You feel that point of spicy Sangiovese acidity on the finish.
