Mainly barrel-fermented Roussanne from sandy soils, the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Cuvee Barberini offers an interesting contrast between its ripe, toasted-grain aromas and lean, crisp, citrusy palate. It's medium to full-bodied, tightly coiled and marked by lime and pineapple on the lengthy finish. I suspect it may drink well for up to a decade. Tasted twice (once blind), with consistent notes.

The 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Cuvee Barberini ups the Roussanne and barrique proportions to 80%, with the balance a blend of Clairette and Grenache Blanc. It's honeyed and rich on the nose, with scents of roasted nuts joined by grilled pears. Medium to full-bodied, it's round and generous on the palate, with a silky feel and a lingering finish that's surprisingly bright and citrusy, providing a lovely sense of balance.

A rich, lusty, oaky blend of 60% Roussanne, 30% Grenache Blanc and 10% Clairette, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Cuvee Barberini is toasty and mocha-scented, but it backs those elements with concentrated tangerine and pineapple fruit. It's full-bodied and plump but with the structure to support several years of aging.

The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Cuvee Barberini is a full-bodied, lusty white that offers whiffs of smoke, roasted nuts, butter and movie popcorn. It's fun in small doses and will have its fans.

A bigger, richer wine that has more noticeable oak, the tiny production 2015 Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc Cuvee Barberini (80% Roussanne and 20% Clairette, aged in new oak) is tight and backwards at present, and needs a year in bottle to really show its potential. Nevertheless, it offers serious notes of white peach, sautéed apples, brioche and spice, with medium to full-bodied richness and juicy acidity. It’s a terrific white that will age gracefully.
