Composed of estate grown fruit, 40% Marsanne, 40% Roussanne and 20% Viognier, 2009 Marsanne Roussanne Viognier is barrel fermented with a tiny proportion of new oak, matured 8 months and blended of the best barrels. It possesses pretty aromas of apricots, peach kernel, spiced-pears and frangipani. The concentrated medium-bodied palate has high acidity and a silken texture. With a long, chalky finish, this makes a lovely glass for early drinking now, though I suspect it may blossom again in 5-7 years for a richer more honeyed style. Just 300 cases were made. Located in the heart of the Nagambie Lakes region (very close to Tahbilk), Mitchelton is now under the umbrella of the Lion Nathan Group which is, in turn, controlled by Japanese drinks giant Kirin. The compelling and somewhat unconventional winery was built in 1972, resembling an early version of an air traffic control tower. Young senior winemaker Ben Haines seems to be adeptly modernising the approach to the wines while preserving the estate’s essence.Importer: Lion Nathan Group
