Fontanafredda offers a steely and streamlined 2012 Barolo. At the outset, you may notice some ripe fruit layers of blackberry and dried cherry. Those heavier notes blow off to reveal licorice, rose hip, cola and grilled herb. This is a Barolo that has been constructed with simple lines and a fresh approach. It needs another five to ten years of bottle aging before it begins to show its inner complexity.

This is tight and high-pitched, with bracing tannins locked around the cherry, eucalyptus, leather and juniper notes. Should make an elegant if sinewy Barolo in due time.
