The 2016 Barolo Riserva La Volta (with 3,070 bottles and 127 magnums made) opens to a darkened garnet hue and bold textural richness. The wine's structure and tannins are what stand out most at this young stage and give us hope for a long aging trajectory ahead. This Riserva is redolent of black fruit, plum, tea leaf and black rose.

The Giovanni Viberti 2015 Barolo Riserva la Volta (with fruit from the village of Barolo) shows a little more textural richness and width compared to the other wines in this series. The difference is subtle, but this wine takes an easy approach to the nose and the palate with smooth and long-lasting sensations. It wraps carefully over the senses with dark cherry, plum and sweet berry notes. Those are followed by rusty tones, hazelnut and a touch of freshly unearthed truffle. I also found the mouthfeel to be softer and more fleshed out in this wine, suggesting a slightly shorter drinking window perhaps.

Here's a robust Riserva that takes us back to a warm vintage. The 2011 Barolo Riserva la Volta shows some mild evolution with open and slightly oxidized aromas of dried fruit, spice and spicy bresaola or cured meat. That vintage warmth and fruity immediacy gives the wine its cheerful and fruit-forward personality. There is a note of cherry sweetness on the close followed by soft tannins and juicy fiber. Only 1,998 bottles were produced.

This is the roundest and the darkest of the three 2010 Barolo Riservas I tasted from Giovanni Viberti. The 2010 Barolo Riserva la Volta opens to a darkly saturated color with ripe fruit, black cherry and plum. The wine shows good power and structure with plenty of dark fruit packed tight between those firm lines.

The 2007 Barolo Riserva La Volta is aged in oak cask (50 hectoliters) with a strange floral presence makes me think of pressed violets with some petrol nuances. This still needs much more time to unwind. With its very distinct personality, I wonder if I should lower the scores, as it is pungent, a bit rustic and raw. It is powerful. Drink: 2015-2023.
