Jean Raphet is known in France as being one of the very best sources of Chambertin Clos de Beze. Made from 80 year old vines, and aged in 75% new oak, this is an absolutely stunning wine! Masculine, slightly austere but beautifully aromatic on the nose, with touches of roses, spices and violets, this well-endowed, full-bodied, spectacularly balanced gem is packed with red and black berries and Asian spices. Tight and somewhat backward, I recommend drinking this noble work of art between 2004-2012.Note: Only one cuvee of the Chambertin Clos de Beze is made so all bottlings are the same. This note is the result of tastings I did in Burgundy between January 7 and January 29. The wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. Pinot Noir, a fragile varietal, reacts poorly to fining, filtration, and careless bottling techniques, I recommend caution when considering buying a red burgundy based on cask samples. I called it as I tasted it, and hope the bottled wine reflects the quality of the samples I was provided.A bundle of energy, Jean Raphet is always on the go. Dedicated to quality, he is one of the rare Burgundians to have never used a filter. Contrast that with many Burgundy estates that informed me (with pride) that they have recently abandoned filtration.Importer: North Berkeley Imports, Berkeley, CA; tel (510) 848-8910.
