Raphet's outstanding Chambertin Clos de Beze, which has been aged in 100% new oak, exhibits a dark ruby color followed by a super nose of ripe berry fruit and smoky, toasty vanillin. This rich, full-bodied wine reveals great purity and loads of fruit crammed into a plush, succulently-textured format. Already drinking well, it possesses the requisite depth and richness to age for 8-10 years. Raphet, who utilizes whole berry fermentation (which was almost universally successful in 1993), has made some very successful wines for the vintage. His 1993s, which were bottled without filtration or SO2, are among the more seductive, round, plump, succulent Pinots of the vintage. They can be drunk young or cellared for 5-8 years. In that sense, they are atypical 1993s. These delicious 1993 red Burgundies are somewhat of an aberration (stylistically speaking) for the vintage.A Peter Vezan Selection (Paris fax # 011 33 1 42554293), various American importers
