The 2006 Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso offers up dark cherries, earthiness, tobacco, spices and worn-in leather with gorgeous inner sweetness and depth. The wine shows plenty of depth and a long, resonating finish. Although some slight elements of rusticity remain (especially in the aromatics), I can’t think of too many other traditionally made Valpolicellas that offers so much drinking pleasure for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012.
Le Ragose is an excellent source for traditionally-made Valpolicellas and Amarones that can be had for very fair prices.
