The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes is gorgeous. Made from 80% Grenache and 10% each Syrah and Mourvèdre, from the oldest vines on the estate, it offers a traditional, gamey style in its olive tapenade, black licorice, bramble and spice-driven bouquet. As with a lot of the top wines, it still has ample tannin lurking under the fruit, but has good concentration, a supple texture and terrific length. I like it now, but it will drink nicely through 2025.

The seriously-styled, deep ruby/plum/purple-hued 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes offers up aromas of seaweed, ground pepper, ripe cherries, black currants, figs, and spice. Full-bodied, powerful, masculine, and tannic, it will benefit from 3-5 years of cellaring, and should evolve for 15 or more. This top-notch estate has been producing impressive, classic examples of Chateauneuf du Pape for over 25 years. Classic aromas of herbs, fennel and red fruit. Firm tannins, plenty of black fruit. Excellent length.
