The closed, broodingly backward, dark ruby-colored 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chante Le Merle exhibits 15-20 years of aging potential. With airing, it opens to reveal pepper, lavender, Provencal herbs, licorice, blackberry, and cherry aromas. Full-bodied and moderately tannic, it requires 2-3 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2003-2018.
Readers should note that the spelling of Cuvee Chantemerle (which debuted in 1990) has been changed to Chante Le Merle starting with the 1999 vintage because of a trademark legal challenge.
