The luxury cuvee, made from 100% Roussanne, is always called La Fontaine, and it often competes with the best white of the appellation, the famous Beaucastel. Grand Veneur’s 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape La Fontaine Blanc is seriously rich with notes of rose petals intermixed with litchi and exotic tropical fruits. The wine displays great fruit, medium to full body, and terrific intensity and purity. It is a beauty that should drink nicely for 4-5 years, although I suspect in some years it will last a lot longer. Readers have to distinguish between the negociant wines of Alain Jaume, which are under the label “Alain Jaume,” and his estate wines, which appear under the “Grand Veneur” label.
