Medium-deep garnet colored, 2006 Wakefield St Andrews Shiraz offers a nose of earth, Chinese dried plums, kirsch, creme de cassis, licorice, espresso and cinnamon stick. Full bodied with a high level of fine knit tannins, it offers plenty of layered fruit with crisp acid. The long finish still shows a little oak. Drinking now, it should cellar to 2017+.
Known as Taylors in Australia, New Zealand and Asia, Wakefield is the name this winery has had to adopt for the North American and European markets due to a clash with another winery of the same name. Therefore American readers should look out for Wakefield labels while those residing in Oceania look for Taylors…of Australia that is.
