The 2001 Castello di Fonterutoli is intended to be the most representative wine of the house, and its inky ruby color, aromas and flavors of blackberry fruit, leather, and licorice, and tasty mineral notes on a powerful palate unquestionably express the style the house is aiming for. The tannic close indicates that a brief waiting period might be useful, and the wine will drink best from 2007 to 2018. In general, the wines seem as much an expression of the Gironde as of central Tuscany, but they are clearly the result of a scrupulous viticulture and professional winemaking. They will clearly appeal to those looking more for these qualities than for expression of territory and traditions. So be it.
