The Joblot 2008 Givry Clos Du Cellier Aux Moines is dramatically different from its stable mates in boasting darker berry fruit (blackberry and cassis, though red currant as well) accompanied by a pungent amalgam of lemon oil, bittersweet floral perfume, peat, mace, and black pepper. And despite having been bottled for only 2 weeks, this displays a plushness of texture that is also singular in the context of its collection. An impression of salted meat juices wells up and helps convey a sense of deep satisfaction as well as of fascinating contrast with the wine’s fresh fruit. I would look for a decade of satisfaction here. Jean-Marc Joblot reports having harvested in fits and starts in 2008 to maximize ripening potential in each of his sites, and a collection he modestly describes as “the best we could do with just three weeks of sun” is pretty good, displaying a purity of bright fruit, energy, and integration of tannin to which its two predecessors could not lay claim.
