Somewhat controversial, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Hesperides appears to be an experimental blend of 50% Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre that sees some aging in new oak. My least favorite of these offerings, it comes across as structured, tannic, and austere. Furthermore, it lacks the typicity of the estate’s more classic Chateauneuf du Papes. It possesses a saturated purple color, and the wine promises to improve with cellaring, but for me, it just isn’t true Chateauneuf du Pape. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025. This relatively small (25+ acres) estate flies somewhat under the radar, but its offerings from the sandy soils of Pignan are well-worth checking out. This has the hyperripe, exotic fig, boysenberry and blackberry fruit of the vintage, along with blueberry cobbler, pastis and violet notes. Lush and alluring through the long, dark fruit-filled finish. Drink now through 2020. 165 cases made. -JM
