The Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2021 Etna Rosato offers a versatile personality that could pair with a wide range of foods from appetizers to salad lunches. Marc De Grazia tells me that he considers rosé a difficult wine to make because, to paraphrase, it is neither fish nor fowl. Creating balance in rosé, he says, is the biggest challenge. This wine not only shows deft balance, it also produces freshness and delicate aromas of pink rose and cassis. Two vats are made, one sees malolactic fermentation and the other does not. The two are blended according to different percentages according to the character of the growing season to balance acidity against softness.

The Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2020 Etna Rosato (a certified organic wine) pours from the bottle with a delicate pale pink color that is luminous and bright. That pretty appearance is followed by straight-shooting aromas of cassis, pink grapefruit, dried grass or Sicilian wild fennel and crushed volcanic rocks. The finish is short and informal, but the wine delivers nice freshness and balanced acidity.
