This brand—a longtime favorite of mine as a lonely representative of Padthaway in the American market—seems to be winding up. The 2014 Magnus Shiraz remains steadfastly dark in hue and closed on the nose, only hinting at mint and dark fruit. But it's full and expansive on the supple, plush palate, dealing out ripe black cherry and plum fruit, a large helping of licorice and hints of mint, black pepper and vanilla. It should drink well for a decade or more.

Generous, fresh and vibrant, with notes of spearmint and milk chocolate adding richness and depth to a core of black cherry and wild blueberry flavors. Overflowing with mint, chocolate and cherry essences, the 2013 Magnus Shiraz epitomizes the Padthaway region in which it's grown. It's full-bodied and intense, with bold fruit married to spice and herb notes that include allspice, clove and star anise. The tannins are plentiful but ripe and supple, turning silky but remaining just-firm-enough on the extended finish. Drink it over the next decade or so.
