There is only one (once used) barrel of the 2017 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean, and the oak influence imparts a generous veneer to its bouquet of pastry cream, ripe citrus and white flowers. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a rather rich, plump profile that will make for user friendly near-term drinking but which is unlikely to appeal to purists.

The 2015 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean was showing just a slight reduction on the nose, however, I discerned a little more mineralité and terroir expression here compared to the Chassagne Chaumées. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity in the context of the vintage, not an inherently complex Chassagne but pretty and nuanced. Well made (as usual), it should peak around 4-5 years after bottling and drink for several years after that.

The 2011 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos Saint-Jean is drinking beautifully, unfurling in the glass with aromas of crisp buttered orchard fruit, pastry cream and subtle hints of fresh apricot. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, succulent and fleshy, with a generous core of fruit and a bright but open-knit profile, concluding with a gently chalky finish. Since Colin only produces one barrel of Clos Saint-Jean, it's typically one of the more overtly woody wines in the cellar out of the gates—even when vinified and matured in a once-used barrel—but this 2011 proves that it integrates with bottle age.
