The glories of the 2006 vintage are on full display here. Allegrini’s 2006 Villa Giona flows with gorgeous layers of dark cherries, espresso, grilled herbs, dried flowers and French oak. This racy, super-ripe red could use another year or two for some of the oak to integrate, but even today its balance and class are impossible to miss. Allegrini’s 2005 Villa Giona is a great bottle of Veronese red. This dense, mouth filling wine boasts incredible density and richness in its dark blackberries, grilled herbs and spices. The warm microclimate of this vineyard was clearly a help in the challenging 2005 harvest and is felt in the wine’s round, harmonious finish. Villa Giona is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Syrah that spent 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels prior to being bottled. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. Allegrini is one of Veneto’s reference-point producers. The estate is best known for their Amarone, which is one of the fresher versions being made today. The estate’s Villa Giona bottling is produced in a vineyard which the family felt was better suited to international rather than indigenous varietals. The 2004 Villa Giona (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 10% Syrah) reveals a deep color along with a nuanced personality in the layered aromas and flavors that flow from the glass. Expressive plum, new leather and sweet toasted oak all make an appearance in this jammy, unctuous wine. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2016.
