The estate’s 2005 Siepi, equal parts Sangiovese and Merlot, spent 18 months in French oak. It is clearly the product of a less than stellar vintage but with air it gains remarkable harmony as some of the rough edges that are present at the outset seem to soften. Sweet dark fruit, new leather, spices, earthiness and licorice nuance emerge as this full-bodied, intense wine comes together in the glass. The 2005 is a smaller-scaled version of this wine, but it is an excellent and attractive wine nonetheless. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020. Proprietor Filippo Mazzei and consulting oenologist Carlo Ferrini were thrilled with their young wines when I visited Fonterutoli just after the 2006 harvest. The wines we tasted from tank were indeed quite promising, and now the first of these is coming onto the market. The estate has also done very well with its 2005s.Importer: Palm Bay International, Boca Raton, FL; tel. (561) 362-9642
