The black-colored 1993 Hermitage La Sizeranne reveals a huge, roasted, smoky, dense nose, superb richness and ripeness, full body, and layers of flavor. This magnificent wine will need to be cellared for 5-6 years; it has the potential to last for three decades.
Keep in mind that in 1993, Gerard Jaboulet declassified all of his Hermitage La Chapelle and Gerard Chave was not sure whether he would estate bottle any Hermitage under his name. Other producers were unsure of what they would do when I visited them several months ago. Chapoutier's Hermitage tastes as if it came from 1990, not 1993 - a testament, in his opinion, to the Bio-Dynamic farming principles enunciated by Rudolph Steiner seventy years ago.
Chapoutier is proud to boast that while he is now the largest vineyard owner in Hermitage (85 acres, or about one-fourth of the entire appellation), he is only third when it comes to wine production!
