The most noticeable improvements at St. Jean can be seen in the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon program. There are approximately 1,000 cases produced of St. Jean's Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine spends 36 months in oak casks, of which 50% are new. The wine is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, although small portions of Cabernet Franc and Merlot are part of the blend. The 1993 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is a terrific wine from a vintage that has fewer weaknesses than some of my colleagues have suggested. In short, 1993 is a top-flight vintage that has been lost in all the justifiable hype over 1994. The wine reveals an opaque purple color, and a tight but promising nose of loamy earth, black cherries, cassis, and smoke. Full-bodied, dense, and tannic, with impressive levels of richness, this youthful, unevolved, exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon should be at its best between 2000-2015. Tel.
