One of the most distinctive aromatic profiles in my tastings (chocolate-covered coconuts and sweet, mineral-laden black fruits) made this wine distinctive, as well as controversial. The wine possesses full body, layers of flavor, and an intriguing texture, but the finish displays a boatload of bitterly astringent tannin that blisters the taster's palate, in addition to burying much of the wine's fruit. This is another 1986 that appears to be too high in tannin to ever mesh together, but it is so concentrated and youthful that I wonder if another 10-15 years of cellaring won't produce something more profound? The tasting notes for this section are from two single blind tastings, one conducted in May, 1996, in California, and the other in June, 1996, in Baltimore.
