Kistler's 1993s possess even more texture, richness, and concentration than the 1992s. Made in the Burgundian style, the 1993 Vine Hill Road Chardonnay has a Corton-Charlemagne-like mineral component, and a structured, backward, broodingly rich, firm personality. Everything is present, but the wine is less forthcoming and flattering than Kistler's other 1993 cuvees.
When Kistler's 1993 Chardonnays are released, readers will have to move quickly if they want to purchase a few bottles. They are the best Chardonnays Kistler has made - and that's saying something, particularly after the great success of this winery's 1992s. These wines, which are made in a Burgundian style, with significant lees contact, a healthy percentage of new oak (all from the Burgundy cooper Francois Freres), are usually bottled without filtration. They are beautiful examples of Chardonnay that easily compare with Burgundy's fine premier and grand crus.
