The most noticeable improvements at St. Jean can be seen in the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon program. The Merlot Reserve bottlings spend 36 months in barrel, of which 50% are new. I thought all four vintages I tasted of the Merlot Reserve were potentially outstanding wines. The 1995 Merlot Reserve exhibits less aromatic and flavor dimension when compared to the 1994, but it is still a superbly concentrated, thick, juicy wine that may end up having slightly more tannin. With more of a monolithic personality, it tastes slightly muted and more backward in its development than the other vintages. The Reserve Merlots are all made in limited quantities of about 400 cases.Tel. (707) 833-4134; Fax (707) 833-4200
