The most noticeable improvements at St. Jean can be seen in the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon program. The Merlot Reserve bottlings spend 36 months in barrel, of which 50% are new. I thought all four vintages I tasted of the Merlot Reserve were potentially outstanding wines. The 1994 Merlot Reserve reveals a similar character to the 1993, with copious quantities of chocolate-flavored, jammy black cherry fruit intertwined with lavish quantities of toasty new oak. It cuts a larger, more expansive feel on the palate, and displays impressive length and richness. The Reserve Merlots are all made in limited quantities of about 400 cases.Tel.
