The 2012 Chablis 1er Cru Fourchaume comes from limestone soils: 25-year-old vines cropped at 45 hectoliters per hectare, 45% of the crop raised in 5- to 6-year-old French oak and the remainder in stainless steel. It has a laconic nose with tightly wound granite and smoke scents that bide their time, but unfurl nicely with aeration. The palate is clean and fresh with citrus lemon and honeycomb, although it tapers away just a little prematurely, as if to say: That’s quite enough. Drink now-2017.
Domaine Roland Lavantureux offered a mixed bag of delights in 2012, with one of two very impressive wines for the vintage rubbing shoulders with a couple that found the going tougher.
