The 2005 Barolo Fossati is the darkest and richest of these Baroli, which is a bit surprising given the lighter nature of the vintage. The Fossati shows quite a bit of juiciness in its dark raspberries, flowers and sweet French oak. All of the elements come together beautifully in this expressive, fruit-driven Barolo. The finish remains vibrant and plump through to the close. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. These new releases from Cascina Adelaide show quite a bit of potential. The estate seems to be working with high-quality fruit, even if today the wines lack that visceral thrill that might elevate them to another level. Hopefully that will come with time. Within the context of Langhe winemakers, Cascina Adelaide favors plush, modern expressions of Nebbiolo with lots of wood. Barolo Fossati does indeed show awkward oak notes at first and that’s why it’s important to hold this wine a few more years in your cellar.
