One of the curiosities that Mike Officer produces, and a wonderful one at that, is his 2006 Two Acres, a remarkable wine that, in this vintage, is a blend of 75% Mourvedre, 10% Petite Sirah, 8% Carignan, the rest Syrah and Alicante Bouschet. From a vineyard planted in 1910 with yields of 1.7 tons of fruit per acre, this is high-octane Mourvedre with amazing notes of smoked game, beef blood, ground pepper, blueberry, and that classic Mourvedre smell of damp tree bark. A full-bodied, powerful, and distinctive wine that is filled with soul and personality, it is amazing. I am sure it will age well for at least a decade, but who could resist it for that long?
