The palest and most delicate of the 2018 single-vineyard bottlings from Atauta, the 2018 La Roza is a scarce wine produced as a result of the project to recover some of the best terroirs with the oldest vines in the valley. It comes from three small plots of 180- to 190 year-old-vines in the middle of a small holm oak forest—0.24 hectares selected for its quality—with 779 ancient plants that were hand-harvested. The fruit fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. The wine has a moderate 14.2% alcohol, very good freshness and acidity and a medium-bodied palate, and the tannins are ultra refined, leaving a chalky sensation on the palate. Unfortunately, 2018 only delivered 574 numbered bottles of this elixir that was bottled in July 2020. This has to be one of my all-time favorite wines from Atauta. Bravo!
