Verget’s 2007 Macon-Villages is a tribute to Jean-Marie Guffens’ skill in pulling surprising character and concentration from a simple appellation and a generally easy-going, high yielding vintage. Aromas of pear, apple, honeysuckle, and vanilla lead to a surprisingly creamy and expansive yet generously juicy palate, and a highly satisfying finish featuring subtly bitter notes of citrus peel and vanilla, and distinct chalk. This hasn’t much stamina from the open bottle, and I would plan to drink it up over the next six months, which is Guffens’ intent. (A group of the best Verget 2006 white Burgundies including some striking successes from the Macon will be reviewed in the issue 179.)A Peter Vezan Selection (various importers), Paris; fax 011 33 1 42 55 42 93.
