The Corton-Charlemagne has a deep, rich, and ripe nose packed with white fruits. On the palate, it is an oily-textured, medium-to-full-bodied, and dense wine with metal, mineral, sweet candied nut, buttered popcorn and poached pear flavors. The En Charlemagne has a perfumed, floral nose and a medium-bodied, silky-textured, and warmly embracing character. This well-balanced and delineated wine reveals flavors of white flowers, traces of anise and touches of clay on its persistent finish.1996 is the last vintage in which Maison Jadot will offer an En Charlemagne, which is a shame. I always found it to be a fascinating terroir tasting to compare it with this firm's other two wines from the same grand cru vineyard. It should be consumed between 2000 and 2005. One of Jadot's greatest whites ever. Very impressive for its pure, clean and racy clarity of mineral flavors (as expected from a great Corton-Charlemagne). Powerful yet delicate, it has some heavy oak but is also full-bodied and marvelously balanced for long-aging. Greets you with violet and butter aromas from the new wood, then performs acrobatics with lots of chalky, wet stone, tropical and ripe fruit flavors.
