The 2009 Vacqueyras is composed of 50% Grenache, 40% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre aged primarily in large oak with about one-fifth in smaller barriques. Its dark plum/purple color is followed by a big, sweet kiss of truffles, licorice, camphor, garrigue, black raspberries and cherries. This medium to full-bodied 2009 should be drunk over the next 4-5 years.
This is the first time I have tasted the wines from Benoit Lavau’s small estate in Gigondas.
