The Garrafeiras are a step up in this winery’s lineup. They generally showed very well, from what I saw both in the USA and in Alentejo. They represent the best barrels, according to winemaker David Baverstock, and are usually a cut or two above the Reservas. Wine alert: I am not publishing a note on the unreleased (as of this writing; scheduled for December, 2007) 2004 Garrafeira at this time because it was totally closed for business when I had it at the winery, but it has the potential to become the best wine I have had from Esporao. The 2003 GARRAFEIRA “PRIVATE SELECTION” is simply delicious. It is a principally a blend of Syrah and Alicante Bouschet, with some Aragones mixed in. It is overtly fruity, but has fine supporting structure. It is average in depth. It is bright, with a somewhat mouthwatering, very succulent finish. Although not quite as intense as the 2001, it is far sexier and utterly charming. Despite its forward demeanor, it needs an hour or so of air to show that it has structure, too. Drink now-2015.
