The Garrafeiras are a step up in this winery’s lineup. They generally showed very well, from what I saw both in the USA and in Alentejo. They represent the best barrels, according to winemaker David Baverstock, and are usually a cut or two above the Reservas. Wine alert: I am not publishing a note on the unreleased (as of this writing; scheduled for December, 2007) 2004 Garrafeira at this time because it was totally closed for business when I had it at the winery, but it has the potential to become the best wine I have had from Esporao. The 2001 GARRAFEIRA “PRIVATE SELECTION” is a beauty, a blend of Syrah, Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is intense and powerful, very focused and rather tight. As the fruit gradually emerges, it throws off fine flavors, and comes a little more into balance. This will be well served by a little more cellaring. This is very much a creature of its vintage, well structured and precise. It should age very well. Drink 2008—2016.
