The 2004 Barolo Bricco delle Viole has lost that touch of freshness that is still found in the 2005. The structured, layered 2004 has begun to develop wonderful complexity in its tobacco, leather, licorice, spices, minerals and menthol. In another few years it should be a magical wine, but for now patience is required. This is another sublime Barolo in the making. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024. Vajra is one of Piedmont’s best kept secrets. Here readers will enter a world of sublime hand-crafted, artisan wines of the very highest level. This has an attractive floral nose, with hints of ripe raspberry, fresh mushroom and citrus fruits. Medium- to full-bodied, with citrus and cedar flavors, fine tannins and a clean, almost crisp finish. A little hollow midpalate. Needs some time to unravel and broaden out.
