The 2000 Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots bursts forth with spicy, herbal cherries. A medium-bodied, lush wine, it broadens on the palate to reveal loads of spicy red fruits and blackberries. This expressive, satin-textured beauty also displays a long, cherry-filled finish. Drink it over the next 6 years.
Concerning the 2000s, de Smet said “the grapes were very ripe and had thin skins so the wines are not very structured. There was some rot, but we were able to sort it all out. Overall, I like the 2000s a lot, they are full of fruit and give pleasure. What more can a winemaker ask for?”
Readers hungry for news on the upcoming 2002 vintage will be interested to hear that it was the first time in de Smet’s career where he didn’t chaptalize a single vat. He did say, however, that he was compelled to acidify some lots.
