The 1992 Vosne-Romanee Premier Cru (all from the excellent Les Suchots vineyard) reveals copious quantities of sweet toasty oak, combined with rich, smoky, black-cherry fruit. Ripe, with low acidity and no hard edges or detectable tannin, this attractive, fruity and seductive wine should drink well for 3-4 more years.
The 1992 red Burgundy vintage may justifiably be considered mediocre when looked at from an overall perspective, but now that the wines have been bottled, it is easy to identify who has produced the finest wines - all of which tend to share a rich, velvety texture, and gorgeous suppleness and richness. I have been an admirer of the delicious wines produced by Jean-Pierre de Smet since his debut 1987 vintage. The 1992s are all that red Burgundies should be - expansive, pure, rich, deliciously supple, and ideal for drinking over the next 5-6 years.
