Gorgeous aromas of crushed rocks/wet stones, white peach, pineapple, and honeyed citrus soar from the glass of the 2006 Chardonnay Hyde Vineyard. Medium to full-bodied, fresh, and lively, this is a superb effort to drink over the next 2-3 years. One of the most impressive Burgundian-styled negociant operations in California, the quartet of Donald and Heather Patz, James Hall, and Anne Moses continues to fine tune and improve what were already top-notch wines. Their 2006 Chardonnays represent successes for the vintage. All four 2006 Pinot Noirs are good given the vintage, but not at the level that one expects from high quality Pinot Noir producers.Tel. Although many will find this Chard fancy and worth the price, the oak sticks out too much, giving it outsized butterscotch and toast flavors. Maybe something less than 40% new oak would have let the tropical fruit, citrus and pear flavors express themselves more purely.
