The 1990 Volnay-Santenots is also a dark, dense, ruby/purple-colored wine, with a big, oaky, herb, jammy cherry nose, and rich, highly structured, full-bodied flavors that display considerable alcohol, tannin, and body. The wine needs 2-4 years of cellaring, but should keep for a decade. The Meursault-Clos de Mazerat, the Volnay-Clos des Santenots, and the Volnay-Santenots constitute the domaine's estate vineyards. The wines are made in a muscular, chunky, full-bodied style that appears to submerge some of the Pinot Noir's fragrance and elegance. They are densely colored, rich, macho wines that should age nicely for 10-15 years. I preferred them to the firm's more expensive bottlings from the Cote de Nuits.
