The 1988 is almost as good as the 1989. Nineteen eighty-eight was an excellent vintage in Gigondas, and this wine looks to be marginally the finest of the vintage, along with the great efforts of the likes of Domaine les Goubert and Domaine de Cayron. The huge, mineral, toasty, black-currant-scented bouquet is enthralling. In the mouth this full-bodied wine has great presence, super depth and length, slightly better acidity, and more definition than the 1989. This is a terrific Gigondas. Anticipated maturity: now-2002. Last tasted 8/96.
